Here at Fabrics Galore, we have a carefully curated range of different fabrics available, including our top quality ponte roma fabric, which is a double-knit fabric that was first developed in Italy. This material has recently become even more popular, as jersey fabrics are a great practical solution for the unpredictable early-autumn weather. To learn more about ponte roma fabric, and the different variations we have available at Fabrics Galore, feel free to continue reading.
What does ponte roma mean?
The name ‘Ponte Di Roma’ roughly translates as Roman Bridge, as the fabric’s structure resembles classic roman bridges - which is where the inspiration for this name came from. This soft and sturdy fabric is a double-knit material, which essentially means there are two layers of fabric knitted together with two sets of needles. Ponte Roma is a thicker fabric, with a slight horizontal ribbed appearance, and is available in lightweight, midweight and heavyweight varieties.
How can you use ponte roma fabric?
In the dressmaking world, ponte is a very stable fabric to work with and is a great choice of material for a beginner. Every garment you create with this fabric will be incredibly flattering, as it creates a more streamlined look. We often recommend using ponte roma fabric to design dresses and tops, but the possibilities truly are endless with what you can design. If you want a crisp, structured look with your dressmaking project, with added stretch and comfort, ponte roma is the ideal choice for you.

Why is Ponte Roma fabric so popular?
One of the great things about ponte roma is that it’s so easy to care for. Because of its layers of interlocking knit, this fabric is very stable and holds its shape when you cut it. This is the complete opposite to other jersey knits, which often have a far more fluid structure. When this material is used in dressmaking, it doesn’t fray or crumple, as any creases tend to drop out without them even being noticeable.
- Versatile
As we have already mentioned, ponte roma fabric can be used in so many different ways, as the material is both comfortable and flattering - often a rare combination. As it’s often a more medium-weight, ponte roma is perfectly suited to more structured garments rather than draping clothes, especially during the autumn/winter fashion season. Potential dressmaking projects could include dresses, skirts, relaxed blazers, trousers, cardigans and more.
