With Autumn coming in thick and fast and the prospect of the winter months ahead, it means we are looking forward to evenings at home, and with Christmas just around the corner now might be the time to look at your sleepwear not just for you but maybe as a thoughtful and lovely Christmas gift. So, let’s look at which fabric is best for a good night’s sleep?
Which Fabric is Best for Nightwear?
Basically, I think we all want to feel warm and cosy in our nightwear but at the same time we want a breathable fabric which will be cool enough for the milder winter weather; because let’s face it, the unpredictability of the weather is a national obsession and the smallest temperature fluctuations can really impact a good night’s sleep.
- Brushed Cotton Fabric for Pyjamas
We are hoping that we aren’t alone, but we are big fans of a cosy pair of brushed cotton pyjamas. Perfect for keeping you warm in the cooler months but is it even Christmas morning if you aren’t wearing a pair of tartan pyjamas? Not only will these be perfect for sleeping in, but a pair of flannel trousers are also great for teaming with a jumper and simple trainers for all day loungewear.
Let’s not say it too loud but our latest selection of brushed cottons feature some of our best and our favourite fabrics at the moment.
Brushed Cotton Flannel Tartan White and Brushed Cotton Lady Penelope Pink
But Brushed Cottons don’t have to mean a classic check fabric, our floral brushed cottons are continuous best sellers. We were thinking they would make a lovely pair of Jim jams for a little girl. But could be made in a lovely navy floral print for an adult if you didn’t want to commit to the whole pink look but still keeping the cosy vibe.

- Bamboo Fabric
According to the National Sleep Foundation, you really want a fabric which is naturally moisture-wicking to be sure of a good night’s sleep and it was news to us too, but apparently bamboo is really excellent at keeping you comfortable and as a bonus is exceptionally soft on the skin. What is more, bamboo is also hypoallergenic which is great for allergy sufferers and 100% biodegradable for all you eco-warriors out there.
We think our range of bamboo jerseys are just about perfect to take you from bed to all-day loungewear ….and back to bed again.

Children’s Pyjama Fabrics
Now it’s not just adults who need pyjamas, they are an important part of all children’s wardrobes especially at Christmas: what else can you possibly be wearing when open presents and eating chocolate? Jersey is a perfect fabric for children’s clothing anyway, but especially for little leggings and t-shirts for sleeping. But to make some extra special Christmas pyjamas how about our latest Polar Bear Jersey with a co-ordinating ribbing.

Or if your children are getting their favourite Lego under the Christmas tree this year, how about some matching pyjamas in our building block jersey to really get them in the mood for all-day Lego building?

Best Fabrics for Dressing Gowns
Finally, if we are talking about nightwear, let’s be honest we need to talk about dressing gowns. Now dressing gowns fall into two categories: either a cosy (some might say unattractive) one or more of a kimono impossibly chic style dressing gown.
If you are looking for the impossibly cosy, practical dressing gown there are only really two fabrics to talk about, either polar fleece or our old favourite, bouclé. These are incredibly practical because both can be chucked in the wash at a moment’s notice.

Children’s dressing gown fabric
If you want something a bit brighter and more fun for the kids, our anti-pill spun polar fleece fabrics come in some gorgeous designs for your little ones including a camo and rainbow fleece.
But if you’re thinking more of a chic kimono style dressing gown you really want something with a bit more drape. Possibly a viscose, to give that needed dramatic swoosh. Our latest prints are possibly what dreams are made of, and the ecovera is the latest in our sustainable range too. Ideal as a gift for your eco warrior friend.

Or a more classic but ever so elegant paisley print dressing gown in our latest range of viscose drape fabric.
Summer Nightwear Fabric
Sleepwear is not just for the colder months though, sometimes you need something slightly cooler (we say sometimes, we live in the UK- it’s not that often). Now the ideal thing for these occasions is either a seersucker, a Swiss knot or a cotton lawn.
- Seersucker nightwear fabric
We have just taken delivery of some seersuckers at FG headquarters, and they would make some super chic pyjamas’ especially the plain stripe ones. They could be your must-have for holidays in warmer climates.

Swiss Knot Nightwear Fabric
We at Fabrics Galore are really hoping that we get some our Multi coloured Swiss Knot Pyjamas for our stockings at Christmas. We have been thinking since the summer, they would make the perfect pair of Fifi Pyjamas from Tilly and the Buttons.
