As we wait for the warmer weather and hope that summer really is just around the corner, it’s definitely time to start looking at our children’s summer wardrobes from last year and work out what they have grown out of (everything?) and what we might need to make new for this year. Or maybe you have a child’s birthday or christening in the family that requires a special outfit to make them look even more adorable than usual?
Whatever you are planning to make, whether it’s hard-wearing comfy play wear or a cute party outfit, we have searched out the best children’s sewing patterns for summer to inspire your creative juices. And don’t forget, we have an amazing collection of children’s fabrics to bring each and every pattern to life.
Children’s T Shirt pattern
Photo Credit: @sewingfi, Fabric: Building Blocks Jersey
Inspired by @sewingfi who made these adorable children’s T-shirts, we hunted down the pattern she used which is the Kid’s ABB TEE, a free children’s T-shirt pattern from the Do it Better Yourself Club. It’s a beginner’s pattern and is available in a regular or slim fit which is really handy. It also has 3 different sleeve lengths and an optional pocket for the more experienced sewer. @sewingfi used our ever-popular Building Blocks children’s jersey but we have plenty more children’s jersey fabrics including animal prints, diggers, dinosaurs and cute pussycats.
Children’s Hoodie Pattern
Ruth Maddock Makes Children's Playtime Raglan Hoodie
Let’s face it – even the warmest summer day at the beach can turn chilly and a hoodie to slip on over shorts is always useful. Even better, nearly all children seem to love a hoodie, don’t they? Ruth Maddock Makes who specialises in sewing patterns for children with sensory challenges has this pattern for a Children’s Playtime Raglan Hoodie featuring a front pocket. It fits the bill perfectly and is crying out to be made up in one of our children’s jersey fabrics with a contrasting ribbing.

Children’s Dungaree Pattern
Ready to Sew Child Teen Penny Overalls
With our unreliable summer months, layering is still important for everyone's wardrobes. A great option for all weathers are dungarees and none are cuter than the Ready to Sew Penny Overalls. But to make them even cuter, how about making a pair in our Hickory Stripes? With their bright colours they will always be summer ready. Even better, the Hickory Stripes are heavy denim and will survive everything that kids can thrown at them over the summer holidays.
Children’s Summer Dress Pattern

We love the peephole and bow detail on the back of this gorgeous summer dress created by @lizziesewsclothes using the Daisy dress pattern by @ohmeohmysewing made up in our printed cotton, it’s a small world.
Not only does it look great in that print, but it would work in any number of our cotton fabrics and we have so many, there really is something special for everyone; whether you need something pretty or a novelty print, FG has a fabric for you.
Children’s Summer Shorts
This free pattern for elasticated shorts from Bobbins & Buttons is so simple that you can even make them with the kids (if you’re feeling brave!)
Available in two different lengths and suitable for children age from 1-10 years, you might just have to make several pairs for the holidays. Bobbins & Buttons recommends quilting cotton, woven cotton or cotton blends as well as sweatshirt fabric or even lightweight denim. Check out our children’s collection for plenty of choice of fabric and print.
Baby’s First Summer Dress or Playsuit Pattern
Photo Credit: @lilikee_etsy Fabric: Ditsy Floral Swiss Knot Cotton
We just had to include this perfect lightweight dress for baby’s first summer made by @lilikee_etsy using the Jamie Smocking pattern from Children’s Corner made up in our perennial favourite Ditsy Floral Swiss knot cotton. With a smocked bodice and peter pan collar it would make a lovely birthday or christening dress. The pattern can also be adapted as a romper suit for boys and has an easier unsmocked version for less confident sewers.
