As Autumn gives way to Winter, we are very firmly in peak trouser wearing season and at Fabrics Galore we have looked out some of the best available trouser sewing patterns to make gorgeous and stylish, comfortable yet, dare we say it, “fashion-forward” trousers for your winter wardrobe. From wide leg to cropped, from smart to casual, get ready to explore our selection of trouser patterns and where to buy them, with our recommended fabrics for each.
Trouser Pattern No 1: Merchant & Mills Quinn Trousers Pattern
The side button openings on this pattern really reference the sailor inspired trousers which have been so popular on the high street. With a wide leg, back welt products and a rear buckle for a snug fit, this pattern is ideal for an intermediate skilled dressmaker who wants to make a smart casual pair of trousers.
We recommend medium weight woven fabrics like twill, denim, corduroy or even lightweight wools and linens.
Trouser Pattern No 2: Closet Core Patterns Mitchell Trousers
This high-waisted trouser pattern with deep front pleats and angled pockets has the option of a tapered ankle leg or full-length wide leg and adjustable waist straps. You can choose a hidden hook fastening or classic button closure. For intermediate dressmakers who want to make elegant and comfy trousers. This pattern would look great in a classic blue denim.
Trouser Pattern No 3: Tilly and the Buttons Thea Trousers
The Thea trousers offer a wide leg very day trousers with two different lengths and various pocket variations. Tilly and the Buttons patterns are always easy to follow with detailed instructions suitable for advanced beginners.
When Tilly and the Buttons launched the Thea pattern, they cleverly chose to make it in one of Fabrics Galore’s brushed panama cotton fabrics. Although primarily a furnishing fabric in our collections, brushed panama is an excellent choice for trousers and comes in 16 gorgeous colours from the bright pink shown in the pattern, to more subtle blues, greys and greens.
Trouser Pattern No 4: Sew Liberated Chanterelle Pants and Shorts
Three leg options including full length, cropped and shorts, all with an easy elasticated waist, makes the Chanterelle trouser pattern a versatile all-season option for dressmakers.
Sew Liberated Chanterelle Pants + Shorts
We recommend non-stretch light to medium weight fabric with a little bit of drape such as a chambray or linen blend.
Trouser Pattern No 5: Modern Sewing Co. Worker Trousers
Described as the ultimate everyday trousers, these are perfect if you are looking for an alternative to jeans. They have a slight balloon in the leg before tapering at the ankle which is an excellent nod to the current barrel leg shape which is so popular on the high street. All the reviews mention that they are the comfiest trousers to wear, so you know they’ll work hard in your wardrobe. Recommended for intermediate skill level dressmakers.
We recommend a medium to heavy weight twill, drill, denim or canvas fabric.
Trouser Pattern No 6: Anna Allen Persephone Pants and Shorts
Another trouser pattern which celebrates a wide leg but uniquely does not have side seams, so the front and back pant legs are cut from a single piece of fabric. High waisted with a concealed button fly, front pockets and back waist shaping darts, this pattern is ideal for first time trouser makers and reviewers note the exceptional fit.
Although intended for cotton canvas or denim with no stretch, you can make them with up to 5% stretch woven fabrics. At Fabrics Galore, we recommend using one of our best-selling coloured stretch denims with 2% spandex or for extra jazziness one of the dressmaking cotton twill striped fabrics.
Cotton Twill Medium Stripe Pink & White
Trouser Pattern No 7: Bella Loves Patterns Billy Trousers
A loose fit, relaxed full length wide leg and 2 sets of pressed pleats make these a stylish trouser pattern with lots of great features: two height options, side slash pockets, hook and bar closure, five belt loops and a single welt pocket on the back.
At Fabrics Galore, we recommend a suiting weight fabric like wool, wool blends, gabardine and flannels. And our special Italian Check Pacienza cashmere wools are spot on.
