Each Autumn, dressmakers are excited to see how they can sew the new season's fashion trends, embracing the new colours, fabrics and key pieces to add to their autumn wardrobes. At Fabrics Galore we are always looking to interpret the autumn fashion trends in the most accessible way for dressmakers. Read on for a few recommendations.....
Autumn 2022 Trend 1: Denim on Denim
You know us, we always think denim is a great idea but especially in autumn when you can layer it up depending on whether we have a long lasting summer or if we need to start layering up on the sweatshirts sooner rather than later. As we have said before, denim is great for a pinafore dress which can be layered up with a t-shirt in warmer weather or with a jumper if it is cooler.
But instead of sticking to the usual blue denim, how about mixing it up with a more neutral denim, maybe an ecru. This is a great option for the autumn, as it can be teamed nicely with navy and caramel without seeming too dark for sunnier days.

But the important message from many of the fashion shows for Autumn Winter 2022 was that one piece of denim is not enough. Really you should be wearing denim, on denim, on denim. So maybe consider adding a denim jacket into the mix too.
Autumn 2022 Trend 2: Fuchsia Pink
Pink has been everywhere for a while now, in various shades, but for this autumn it is ALL about fuchsia. In fact, it is so hot right now, that the entire Valentino Collection was devoted to the very brightest shade of pink. Now this might seem a bit much for many of you, but it can be slipped into your autumn winter wardrobes in subtle flashes; what about a simple shirt for layering under jumpers so you just get a glimpse at the wrist and neck?
Our cotton lawns would be great for this and these prints are so pretty it seems a shame to hide them away for winter…
Talking about our cotton lawns, they are the perfect pairing with Tilly and the Buttons' latest pattern - the Marnie. The blouse especially could be layered up with a jumper with the pretty collar poking out. Our cotton lawns would work well as they are light enough for all the pin tucks.
Or if you like the idea of wearing lots of pink and were wanting a warmer fabric, how about making a long sleeved layering piece in one of our newer brushed cottons? Still pretty in pink but with the soft cosiness of brushed cotton keeping you warmer as we head into more wintery weather conditions.

Autumn 2022 Trend 3: Tartan
Tartan is one of those prints which goes with Autumn and is never not bang on trend. However it feels like this year might be all about the tartan shirt; maybe it’s after a summer of cool dresses but tops, blouses and shirts are really having a moment, it seems. A tartan shirt is a great layering piece and is great for when it feels like autumn first thing but is still a bit warm by midday and will see you through to colder times when layering up with cardigans and jumpers. Our favourite tartan at the moment is this beautiful Ewan tartan cotton shirting.
We thought it had a real Vivienne Westwood vibe and would great with jeans as denim is so BIG right now.
But if the tartan trend has got you thinking you can simply never go wrong with a pair of tartan trousers, they are a great alternative to jeans and we have a great collection of Natty Checks which are the ideal blend of viscose and polyester making them a great trouser fabric.

Autumn 2022 Trend 4: Vests
Now before we proceed, we don’t mean vests like you had to wear at school, we are talking more of a body warmer/waistcoat type vibe. Knitted versions have been seen everywhere from Boden to Marks and Spencer but we were thinking we must be able to make a great waistcoat? Well, the New Craft House has just released this everyday waistcoat pattern and it could be a game changer for Autumn Winter dressmaking. This can be made from any light-weight fabric with no stretch such as chambray, linen, cotton or even a double gauze.
Or it could be a great way of using up all your scraps. But the best part is, it has an inner layer of wadding to keep you super cosy, and you can wear it over pretty much anything, whether t-shirts, jumpers or dresses.
The New Crafthouse Everyday Waistcoat
As you know there is always a special place in our hearts for double gauze and it seems a shame to pack it away for the cooler months but now we can take it through Autumn and Winter. Phew…
