Everyone that makes things for Christmas knows that it all starts in June, so we are a little bit behind. Whether it’s making the perfect party dress, presents or just some Christmas decorations we had all better get our skates on.
The best part about seasonal fabric projects is that there are so many new Christmas prints to choose from when you’re topping up last year's fabric stash and here are a few Christmas fabric gift and decoration ideas for this holiday season.
Christmas fabric decorations
First things first, let’s start with the decorations;
Bunting
We have a motto here at Fabrics Galore; you can simply never have enough bunting. The great thing about bunting is that you can use it on a Christmas tree but also in other areas of the house to really add some Christmas sparkle, for example; your bannisters, doorways or even just across the ceiling.
When we were doing our research into festive bunting we found that there were lots of options that moved away from the traditional triangular-shaped bunting and the possibilities were frankly endless. You can cut out little green Christmas trees or festive red hearts, for example, and there are also some more unusual shapes like rectangles which are ideal for showing off a more detailed print of Rudolph or other Christmas characters.
Tablecloth
Another brilliant, yet simple, way of adding a Christmassy feel to your home is by creating a special Christmas tablecloth. At Fabrics Galore, we have a large selection of Christmas prints on a wider width fabric, making it easier than ever before to use them as a tablecloth or runner.
If you are looking to make a timeless table runner and you were thinking you might need something slightly heavier, our latest furnishing fabrics would be perfect and you can’t go wrong with gingham or ticking.
Stockings
Christmas is all about spending time with family and friends, but really the important part is getting lots of presents. Of course, Father Christmas can’t leave lots of presents if you don’t have the correct stocking, so this is one of the most important fabric projects. This year at Fabrics Galore we’re thinking that Scandi-vibe stockings might be good, so it’s handy that we have just got in a lovely selection of new Scandi Christmas prints.
These Scandinavian Christmas fabrics are patchwork and quilting weight cotton too, which means they’re perfect for this Quilted Stocking by Suzie Quilts. Also, they are printed on an calico-like backing too, so finding a suitable lining or backing is really easy, which is what everyone wants at such a busy time of year.
To add an extra bit of fancy-ness to our stockings, we thought about adding some cosy cream bouclé to trim the top as well.
Christmas presents to make
So now it’s time to face it, Christmas is about giving presents;
Oven gloves
Firstly, we wanted to turn our attention to the second most important person at Christmas (first being Father Christmas, naturally): the chef. And to show you some perfect handmade gifts for them, starting with some festive oven gloves. This free pattern for the Bombazine Oven Mitt is super cute and perfect for whipping up as a Christmas gift.
The ideal fabric for this particular Christmas sewing project is a slightly heavier cotton and our furnishing weight Christmas prints are great for an oven glove project. However, even more importantly, we also stock heat-protective lining for oven gloves and as the pattern suggests, you can even use up some of your leftover fabric scraps to make some extra special gifts this year.
It’s worth noting that these heavier Christmas prints would also make a great apron for the person who has been working hard in the kitchen all day too.
Other ideas
